Chair of Modeling of Adaptive Systems

The chair „Modeling of Adaptive Systems“, headed by Prof. Dr. Tobias Hoßfeld, researches in the area of measurement, modeling, evaluation and optimization of adaptive systems in order to solve real world problems.

The research activities of the chair focus on Internet technologies and Internet applications. Typical web-, cloud- and smartphone apps and services for end users but also for enterprises are considered. In particular, Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) as perceived by the end user or customer are a major research topic. Beyond general relationships between QoE and measurable parameters, QoE models for concrete applications are derived.

The chair also researches online social networks with a focus on the measurement, modeling, and analysis of the structural properties and the information flows in those networks. The results can be utilized to improve traffic management in the Internet taking into account economic aspects. Another use case is the Enterprise 2.0, i.e. usage of social software platform within companies. The analysis of the emerging enterprise social networks allows the identification of problems. Beside social media networks, crowdsourcing is one of the emerging new applications and business models in the Internet. The application of the crowdsourcing approach in enterprise or mobile environments is still in the beginning and will become more important in the next few years. A research focus of the chair is on the analysis and the design of adaptive crowdsourcing systems.

The understanding of the Internet technologies is fundamental for improving the services on top. Network virtualization, the migration of services and functionalities into the cloud and the programmability of networks and network elements (software defined networking) are investigated at the chair.
